By Chaitanya Padukone – ‘Perfectionist’ actor Shahid Kapoor has impressively raised the bar of his histrionic credentials with the release of his latest ‘Kabir Singh’ movie with a bumper super-hit opening. In ‘Kabir Singh’, Shahid has played the edgy, realistic role of an angry, young surgeon who drives into into self-destruction, and alcoholism after a shattering heartbreak. “ Honestly after watching the Telugu original ‘Arjun Reddy’, a ,mega-hit cult movie, I had a ‘hang-over’ even after I exited the theatre . That’s when I felt I should attempt this challenging character for an all-India audience. Being the son of the par excellence actor Pankaj Kapoor, I guess I have inherited the daring genes to grab dark, flawed screen-characters and break through the stereotypes,” chuckles the ‘Udta Punjab’ drug-addict-rapper, who had earlier even played a ‘double role’ in ‘Kaminey’ directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. “Being a fitness freak and health-conscious all along, I am a teetotaler and abstain from alcohol and I am a non-smoker as well. Out here in ‘Kabir Singh’, I have played an alcoholic and smoke cigarettes as required by my character. The icing on the cake is that I have ‘three’ distinct contrast looks including one where I even sport this bushy beard and dark glasses,” he says gleefully. The outspoken Shahid also known for his classy agile screen-dancing is romantically paired in ‘Kabir…’ opposite the gorgeous actress Kiara Advani, who in turn plays a medical shy student who later gets besotted with ‘Kabir’. “In world cinema, grey characters backed by slick performances have always emerged memorable, like mine in ‘Haider’,” shrugs the ‘Padmaavat’ hero. Does the witty Kapoor wish to share a message to his fans and cine-goers. “ One has to channelise all kinds of negative emotions and transform them into positive. Else they can be devastating and— being jilted is one of them,” he signs off.
